Your valid US driver's license is technically accepted in Dubai, but rental companies almost always require an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. The IDP costs about $20 and can be obtained from AAA before your trip. Without an IDP, you risk being turned away at the counter or facing police fines of up to Dhs 500 ($136) if stopped. Bottom line: get the IDP—it's cheap insurance against major headaches.

The minimum age to rent a car in Dubai is 21 years old. If you're under 25, expect a "young driver surcharge" of approximately Dhs 100-150 ($27-41) per day, depending on the rental company and vehicle class. Some luxury and sports car rentals set the minimum age at 25. Consider this extra cost when budgeting—over a week, young driver fees can add $200-300 to your bill.

Dubai uses the Salik electronic toll system—gates are located at strategic points on major roads like Sheikh Zayed Road. Tolls cost Dhs 4-6 ($1-1.60) per crossing, automatically deducted from your prepaid Salik tag (provided with most rentals, often with a Dhs 50-100 refundable deposit). Summer temperatures in Dubai regularly exceed 45°C (113°F), creating serious driving hazards. Before driving, check tire pressure (heat increases it) and ensure your AC works—it's not a luxury, it's survival. Never leave children, pets, or valuables in a parked car, even for minutes; interior temperatures can reach 70°C within 30 minutes. Sandstorms can reduce visibility to near zero—pull over and wait them out. If your car overheats, stop immediately, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool before opening the radiator. Always carry extra water.

Major highways connecting Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other emirates are excellent and well-lit at night. However, desert driving requires a 4WD vehicle with proper equipment—2WD cars get stuck in sand easily, and breakdown assistance in remote areas can take hours and cost heavily. Camels frequently cross desert roads, especially near dusk; collisions cause major vehicle damage and fines. If you venture off-road into sand dunes (a popular activity), inform someone of your plans and never go alone. For most tourists, sticking to major highways and urban driving is the safer choice.
