Can I drive in Malawi with my US license, or do I need an International Driving Permit?

You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your US license. Rental companies in Lilongwe typically won't hand over keys without one—the IDP serves as a multilingual translation recognized by local police. Get one from AAA before departure (~$20). Your US license alone won't suffice for insurance claims if you're pulled over.

Malawi drives on the LEFT—will I have a problem as an American driver?

Yes, this is the biggest adjustment. Malawi uses left-hand drive vehicles on the LEFT side of the road (British-style). At roundabouts, traffic flows clockwise and you yield to the right. This is the opposite of everything you're used to. Take 10-15 minutes in a quiet parking lot before hitting main roads, and never assume muscle memory will kick in at intersections.

How are the roads outside Lilongwe? Can I safely explore national parks?

Road conditions vary drastically. The M1 highway connecting Lilongwe to Blantyre is paved and decent, but secondary roads—especially toward Lake Malawi's beaches and park entrances—turn into rough, pothole-laden dirt tracks. During rainy season (Nov-Apr), some rural roads become impassable even with a 4WD. Rent a vehicle with high ground clearance and avoid night driving on unfamiliar routes.

What's the speed limit, and how will I know if I'm over it?

Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 100 km/h on highways. Police checkpoints are common on major roads, and officers may use handheld radar. Fines are typically paid on the spot (negotiable), usually $5-$30 USD. Speed governors on rental cars are not common, so watch your speedometer carefully.

Is it safe to drive at night in Malawi?

No—avoid night driving whenever possible. Unlit roads, pedestrians and cyclists without lights, stray animals (goats, cows, sometimes wildlife), and occasional broken-down vehicles without hazard lights make night driving genuinely dangerous. If you must travel after dark, stick to the main highway between Lilongwe and Blantyre, keep high beams off when approaching oncoming traffic, and maintain a speed below 70 km/h.

What about fuel? Are gas stations easy to find?

Petrol and diesel are widely available in Lilongwe and along the M1 highway, but sparse elsewhere. Carry a reserve jerry can (5-10 liters) for longer trips to national parks or lakeside destinations. Most stations accept cash in kwacha; credit cards work at larger Shell and Total stations in the capital but not in rural areas. Fill up whenever you drop below half a tank.
