Without an IDP, you may face difficulties at checkpoints or if involved in an accident—even if you have a valid US license.

Lima's traffic is chaotic but manageable if you stay alert. The city has over 8 million vehicles and heavy congestion during rush hours (7-10 AM and 5-9 PM). Drivers frequently ignore lane markings, and honking is standard communication. Main avenues like Avenida Javier Prado and Avenida Brasil are notoriously clogged. However, main highways like the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) are well-paved and well-lit. Avoid driving at night outside the city—unlit vehicles, pedestrians, and animals on roads are serious hazards.

Most Peruvian highways use a mix of cash and electronic toll collection. The Pan-American Highway has toll booths (peajes) charging roughly 5-15 PEN (~$1.50-4 USD) depending on the section. Accepts both cash and major credit cards at most booths. For frequent use, the Telepase system offers an electronic tag that lets you bypass lines—available at toll stations or affiliated shops. Peru uses gasoline (gasolina) with two main grades: 90-octane (regular) and 95-octane (premium), plus diesel. Both unleaded options are widely available at Petroperú (state-owned) and Primax/Repsol stations throughout Lima and along major highways. Gas stations are abundant in urban areas but can be sparse in rural zones, especially heading into the Andes. The 'full serve' model is common—attendants will pump fuel and check tires at no extra charge. Credit cards are accepted at most stations, but carry some cash just in case.

The minimum age to rent in Peru is typically 21 years old for most rental companies. Drivers under 25 may be subject to a 'young driver surcharge' of approximately 25-40 PEN (~$7-11 USD) per day, depending on the company. Some luxury or SUV rentals raise the minimum to 23-25.
