When the car key was still swinging in my hand, my mind was not on the views in Ireland. I was thinking about one thing. I really only paid 1 dollar at the start. I was standing in the parking lot in Dublin. The wind was a bit cold. The sky was getting dark. Planes were taking off and landing in the distance. I closed the car door and touched my card in my pocket. I asked myself a simple question. Can my budget really hold up. Then I answered myself. Good thing I used One-Dollar Freeze. Why did I care so much about that 1 dollar. Because I am a student and also a visitor here. My money is planned very tight. That night when I booked the car on my phone, I saw on QEEQ that I could use One-Dollar Freeze. It said I only needed to pay 1 dollar first to lock the car. The rest would be charged before the rental started. No interest. My first reaction was this. Is this real. Will there be hidden fees. I stared at the price for a long time. Then I told myself one more line. It is just 1 dollar. I can try. If it fails, I will still live. It was a night in early June. The sky outside my window was still bright. I sat at the small table in my room. Next to me were my flight plans and a simple budget sheet. I asked myself again. If I pay the full rental now, will my living money for this month be enough. The answer was clear. It would not. My rent and daily cost were already cut to the lowest. If I paid the whole car rental at once, I would need to live like a broke kid. I looked at the small line on the screen that said pay 1 dollar first. It felt like someone left a small gap of air for me. When I clicked pay, my heart was a bit tight. Only 1 dollar now. What about later. Will they charge something strange. Will a big amount appear suddenly. After I finished the payment, I opened my bank app right away. I checked if the 1 dollar was the only charge. When I saw it was just that, I felt a kind of light feeling. At least the car was booked. My money was still in my account. My life could still go on in a normal way. Time slowly moved to the pickup date. It was around the middle of June. I planned to get the car in Dublin. Two days before, I asked myself again. Will they charge me too early and catch me by surprise. There was no drama. When the trip was getting close, a normal charge showed up on my card. The number was the same as the price I saw when I booked. Not more. Not less. I checked the bill again and said in my head. Good. No interest and no extra pressure. On the pickup day, around the afternoon of June fourteenth, I went to the airport early. When I walked out of the arrivals area, the air was a bit wet. I pulled my luggage to the car rental area. There were some people in the line at the SIXT counter. While I waited, I thought of one thing. If I had paid the full amount at the start, maybe I would not feel this relaxed right now. I remembered how I had asked myself so many times. What if I did not use One-Dollar Freeze. The answer was simple. My account would be almost empty for a while and I would think twice even when buying a small gift. The staff at the counter checked my info and gave me the car key. He said the car was outside in a marked spot. When I walked to the car, a Volkswagen Golf was waiting there. The body of the car had a bit of evening light on it. I opened the door and asked myself one more time. Was using 1 dollar to lock the car worth it. I sat in the driver seat and put my hand on the steering wheel. My answer was yes. For someone like me with a tight budget and a card that I do not want to push too hard, this plan really helped. One thing stayed very clear in my mind. There was no interest in this plan. I am always scared of things that look easy at first and become scary later on the bill. This time it was not like that. From the first 1 dollar to the final charge, everything was clean. I knew how much and when. I did not need to think of it like some big finance tool. I am just a normal person who needs a car. This simple setup was enough for me. When I look back now, the pictures in my head are very clear. First it was me in my small room. On the table were my tickets and budget. Then it was me looking at my phone again and again, asking if I should pay that 1 dollar. Later it was me standing at Dublin Airport with the car key in my hand, knowing my credit card was not pushed to the limit by this trip. Every time I asked myself if there would be a problem, I could later give a calm answer. That feeling is rare for me. Now when I see the words pay 1 dollar first, it is not just some ad line. It is part of how I managed my money for this trip. For me, their One-Dollar Freeze felt like a small breathing space in a very tight budget. QEEQ did not show up many times in my story, but this small space stayed with me during the whole rental experience.
